Single check valves protect the mains supply against fluid category 2 liquids: Liquids that taste funny are warm or discolored, e.g. hot water, the taste from a washing machine hose. It wont harm you but tastes odd. Double check valves protect against fluid category 3 liquids, might cause tummy upsets etc.
